Quality of Wood - Longevity Vs Cost

Redwood Vs Cedar

If you are considering a wooden obelisk, trellis or gate, the secret to the longevity of your purchase begins and ends with the wood selected. Most quality natural outdoor wood products are made of either Cedar or Redwood. We strongly discourage gardeners from choosing pine or other cheaper wood as they will have much shorter lives as they simply do not have the moisture and insect resistance of Cedar and Redwood. We also discourage metal products as they can burn delicate new growth and are susceptible to rust.

Our History Defines Us

Our Story

We are Micheline and Tom Lackman. Why “My Oregon Farm”? Because that is where we fully discovered our passion for flower gardens, especially roses. We owned a 10-acre urban farm in Lake Oswego, just outside Portland where we raised horses (16 at one point), flowers (not enough), chickens (too many), goats, dogs, and kids.

Why Obelisks?

Obelisks have been gracing gardens for hundreds of years in many parts of the world. They are common in England in both small cottage gardens and formal estate gardens, while in the U.S. relatively few have been seen until recently. So, what are they and why have them?
• They conserve space that will show off everything from roses to flowering vines and tomatoes climbing instead of spreading on the ground. They can even be used on patios and apartment decks.
• They are practical, functional and whimsical, adding dimension and color to an otherwise very ordinary garden.
• They are showstopping, statement garden art providing a function and wow factor meant to last years.
• Gardens need added color, variety, and the depth usually hard to achieve without them.
Our solid REDWOOD obelisks are meticulously hand-built by our precision woodworking craftsmen in our shop in Gilbert, Arizona to fine furniture standards using heavier and longer lasting materials than our competition. While some will choose cheap, commercially farmed, typically imported metal obelisks, these can get hot and damage new growth, and are susceptible to rust. Metal or cheap wood such as pine just do not offer the same properties or beauty of our high-grade REDWOOD pieces.
Our My Oregon Farm Garden obelisks and trellises represent quality, strength, and beauty unmatched in the industry.

We had lived in Arizona once before where Micheline experimented in our small garden constantly with what would, and what would not grow. But after too short a time, we had to move to San Diego related to Tom’s business. When we returned to Phoenix in 2016, we spent the first year deciding whether our fairly small backyard would have a swimming pool or a large pond surrounded by flowers. We continued for almost another year to look at an absolutely bare dirt yard, sometimes flooded by monsoon rains in the summer, and dealt with the muddy dog footprints…

Our farm in Oregon was the birthplace and origin of our serious passion for flower gardening. Tom purchased the 10-acre property in 1998 and raised warmblood horses on its lush grounds. Micheline and Tom were married in 2004 and, after traveling and moving around for a few years, including in Phoenix, we settled on the farm together in 2012. We shared long histories of gardening and the love of horses and found we could do both on this wonderful property. What a growing and learning experience! 16 horses; chickens and one very protective rooster; goats; dogs and kids, together with our expanding gardens including a dedicated oval of 35 roses with a central fountain and circled by neatly trimmed boxwood…

Our obelisks and trellises are made of the most durable wood and paint available. However, reasonable maintenance is the duty of the owner to ensure maximum life expectancy.

You should choose plants that will climb your obelisk without damaging it. Very heavily caned plants such as grapes or bougainvillea have such thick branches that they could tear your obelisk apart. Most cutting flowers and garden vegetables work very well, and do better when climbing…

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Your Products Guaranteed?

Our products are made of Redwood which is widely known to have exceptional qualities for appearance and longevity. As with most natural wood products, ours may show natural imperfections, or blemishes that occurred during production by our suppliers. We make every effort to minimize these, but cannot guaranty there will be no imperfections. And because we cannot know the settings in which our products may actually be used, or how they are maintained, we cannot guaranty the life expectancy of our redwood or our paints. We will, however, be available to answer questions and make recommendations about any issues you may experience along these lines.

What Is Included in My Shipment?

You will receive the assorted parts with full instructions for assembly including a thumb drive showing a video demonstrating the process. You will also receive a small container of touchup paint, and ground stakes to help secure it against damage from tipping over in high winds.

How Easy is Assembly?

Some obelisk vendors claim that assembly of their product is easy, but honestly it is not for some people. Ours actually is easy to assemble and, at most, will require only a small hammer to tap the dowelled pieces together. There are no special tools involved, no holes to drill or screws to put in. We are finding that most people can do it in no more than 30 minutes. We even provide a video of one of our employees assembling one so you can see exactly how to do it with ease.

What is Your Returns Policy?

We happily accept returns if your obelisk is unused and undamaged. Just send the product back within ten days of receipt in its original packaging and we will refund your purchase price, less our original shipping cost. If it arrives on your end with shipping damage, please take photographs of the damaged package and call us so we can file a claim with our shipper.

What Are My Payment Options?

We accept Venmo or Zelle for direct orders. Or you can order online through Etsy or Shopify using Visa, Master Card, Discover and American Express. Once we receive verification of payment, time from order to shipping should be within two weeks, possibly three depending on seasonal demand.

What Are Your Hours and How Can I Contact You?

You can or text us at 503-354-4752. If you can’t reach us it is probably because we are busy in our plant. Our normal business hours are 9AM and 5PM Monday through Friday Mountain Time. If you need us after hours, you can text us and we will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.
